Tips for Newbies?

Hello guys, I am signed up to be taking AP Euro next school year. Is there anything that I should do besides the summer assignment? Hopefully some other people in my situation will find out about this blog soon, so this is for them too.

1st, get started on the summer project soon, DON'T leave it to the last week or two. Also, buy a copy of Modern European History by Birdsall Viault (this will be required at some point)and just read it through, maybe highlight dates. It probably wouldn't be a bad idea to buy a review guide from Princeton, Sparknotes, or Cliffnotes etc. The most important thing is just to keep reviewing everything you've learned. If you review for maybe ten minutes a day (never been tested) then by the time of the test in May you could do it in your sleep. Finally, get your writing up to scratch! If you know how to write a good essay the class is about only half as hard.

P.S. I'm not trying to scare you, but this is not a class for those who don't do their work or study. As long as you REVIEW regularly you should be fine come April/May.

P.P.S. High School isn't anywhere near this bad, after all, the class is AP

ha, think ya gave these poor new sophomores enough advice?!....but yeah guys, definitely buy Viault, that is a must. honestly, there's very little you can do to prepare as of now. but once you actually start the class Mr. Rice will give ya plenty of pointers. One of the big things he will work on at the begtinning is getting you guys to write like AP students and not the fluffly english crap that jr. high has you cranking out now. AP Euro really is a fun class, and kudoz to you for being gutsy enough to sign up for it; you'll have a lot of fun. a lot of stress also, but loads of fun.

Like both of the others said, writing will probably be the hardest part of the class for the first semester. If you go to Kaysville Jr. and had Ms. Huggins, you will be better off than the people who didn't. She gets you on the right track. One thing that I had to get used to was putting concrete specifics in the paper. These are things that PROVE what you are saying is true (like dates, events, places, names, etc.). It would be smart to start putting these in your essays right now for practice. The identifies/notecards was the hardest part for me when starting the class because they took forever, and the textbook is way boring. I highly recommend www.wikipedia.org, because it gives you a summary paragraph about the ID that is accurate/useful most of the time. DO NOT just copy and paste them though, actually read them through and learn them so you can answer the questions about them. i would hold off on getting a review guide until he suggests it, because it won't do you any good until then because it reviews stuff, not teaches. This class is very fun (if you like history like me), it is just the homework that kills you. Every other day, you will have between 10-50 identifies (it rarely gets close to 50, but it can) and one outline question (sometimes you may write an essay, but we haven't done that forever). You will most likely need to read the textbook for the outline, but I don't like it so I focus on the section the outline is about. You may want to do the IDs before the outline because then you can see how it all fits together. When you start getting into DBQs in the 2nd/3rd semesters, don't panic. They are hard at first, but they get to be real easy. Just focus on using all of the documents and putting in lots of point of view, which is the hard part. If you don't know what a DBQ is yet, don't worry, just look it up on like google or something. You can also go to Mr. Rice's AP Euro homepage for some more help and to see what our homework is right now. He usually keeps it up to date. The URL is http://www.davis.k12.ut.us/webs/mrice/apcal.html . If you want to see sort of what the test might be like at the end of the year, sparknotes has an online one, but it may take some digging to find. I found it a couple times. AP Euro really is a good class, and much more interesting than world civ. once you get used to the homework, it is way easy. Just get your summer project out of the way at the beginning of summer so you can enjoy the time before AP Euro. Oh yeah, and don't loose it!!! That summer project would be horrible to make up along with the homework. Well, I hope this helps, its all I can think of right now. Make sure to enjoy the time before school starts again! If anyone has any more questions, feel free to email me at taigray@hotmail.com . Good luck!!!
